Malaysia is an enticing country that attracts everyone with its appeal. If you have already been fascinated by its charisma and planning to come here, then you must keep certain things in mind before packing your bags. No, don’t panic. It’s just about handling the stuff in a convenient way. While traveling to foreign places, one must be a little cautious about the surroundings, if not problems might crop up just next door. Thus, before traveling to Malaysia, always check out the travel tips to be at ease.

Drugs: Don’t even think of bringing any recreational drugs into Malaysia. Person at default would be treated with a binding death sentence, even if he is here for transit or carrying small amounts.

Pedestrians: All pedestrians must use pedestrian bridges or pedestrian traffic lights to cross the roads because vehicles don’t stop at zebra crossings.

Travel Documents: It’s always recommended to deposit your travel documents and valuables in a hotel safe or keep them under observation.

Public Display of Affection (PDA): Don’t involve in any of such activities on roads, stations or any other public places in Malaysia.

Drinking Water: Tap water is usually fine to drink. In case you don’t prefer tap water, then bottled water is available at general stores across the country.

Taxis: Taxi drivers hardly use meters, so it’s always better haggle for the prices before getting into the taxi. At nights, prefer using dial-a-taxi / registered service as unregistered taxi drivers may assault their victims.

Credit Card: While using credit card, be careful because you can be swindled. Use plastic only at big and reputed stores, and keep it under observation.

Tourist Police: In case you lost your way or require any help, seek the assistance of a traffic police officer. These officers dress in dark blue shirts and trousers, and checkered hat bands with letter ‘I’ on a red and blue badge on their breast pocket. Most of the times, these officers can be spotted at tourist spots, attractions and monuments.

Washrooms: Public washrooms in Malaysia are safe and convenient to use. Usually they charge between RM0.20- RM2.00 as per the facilities. Always carry some loose change with yourself.

Medical Treatment: Malaysia has about all medical facilities, in case you require any. Tourists usually don’t prefer going to government hospitals, and private medical care being the only option, costs a lot. So, make sure to have adequate travel health insurance.

Vaccinations: Malaysia is one of the healthiest countries in the world. If you’re coming from yellow-fever affected areas, then you’ll be requiring a certificate of inoculation. For cholera and smallpox, no vaccination is needed in Malaysia.

Health Precautions: Always carry your regular and general medicines along. Also keep the recommended prescription in case you fall short of medicine, you can get the related ones from the medical stores. It’s hot and humid in Malaysia and to steer clear of sunburn, mosquito bite etc, bring your sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, mosquito repellent etc and use them whenever required. Don’t take cut fruits from roadside vendors.

Luggage: Always take only that much luggage which you can handle. Take only required things and don’t assemble many things. Prefer taking durable suitcases or bags because you never know how the airlines’ would deal with baggage. Always keep handy bag containing medicines, required things and travel documents.

Safety Guidelines: With crime levels on increase, always be watchful and keep an eye over your belongings. Use common sense judgment whenever dealing with strangers. In big cities, pickpockets and snatch-and-run thieves are really common. So to avoid such situation, be careful and don’t display your valuables or money in public.

Driving: For driving in Malaysia, you need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). However, prefer using taxis because traffic is not very smooth here. Don’t mix drinking and driving as it a punishable offence and breathalyzer tests are common by the police.

Gambling: In Malaysia, gambling is illegal and there are only few spots where it is permissible. Don’t get into illegal gambling joints because tourists are frequently cheated.

Fake Products: While doing shopping, be aware and prefer buying products from reputable stores. Markets like Chinatown often sell fake products.

Airport Tax: Upon departure, airport tax is charged in Malaysia which is RM5 for domestic and RM40 for international flights.

Business Hours: A normal eight-hour working day system, with Saturdays as half-working day and Sunday as complete holiday, prevails in Malaysia. All government offices, public service departments and a few banks generally close on the first and third Saturday of every month. In states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, full working days extend from Saturday to Wednesday while Thursday is a half-working day and Friday is a holiday. Private sector companies usually operate from 9am to 5pm (Monday-Friday) and 9am to 1pm (Saturday) and government offices are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Highlights: The Park houses many species of the deer.
How To Reach: One can reach Deer Park by hiring taxis or by boarding buses, trains from the city.

Kuala Lumpur Deer Park is a square that is dedicated to these beautiful, gentle and intelligent creatures of God. Situated in surging slopes and expansive vale of Lake Gardens, the Deer Park sprawls in about 2 hectares of green land. This carefully selected unruffled area has been developed into a suitable habitat for the deer. And for sure, once been here, these striking creatures will fascinate you to the core.

Furthermore, the park is strategically landscaped and is dotted with lush trees and shrubs to guarantee a cooling habitat. Here you can also witness the smallest hoofed animal of the world. Yes it’s true, the rainforest mouse deer or kancil, which is Malaysia’s most famous deer, can be seen in the park. Moreover, it’s nice to smaller species like that of hinds, does, and fawns roaming without any fear in the valley.

Around the park, there are several ponds that offer water to the creatures and add to the picturesque vista. At the edge of the valley, quite close to the stream, one can easily see numerous mousedeer engaged in their own routines. The best thing about KL Deer Park is visitors are allowed to enjoy the company of these adorable creatures. Further to your delight, these friendly deer come closer to be fed while you watch them.

Location: Lake Gardens
Highlights: The Park houses exotic butterflies and plants.
How To Reach: One can reach here by hiring taxis or by boarding buses, trains from the city.

Kuala Lumpur offers many striking places that are drenched in nature’s bounty, to visitors. One such place is Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park that is located very close to the renowned Bird Park in the precincts of Lake Gardens. This unique park addresses over 6,000 butterflies from 120 exotic species. To house these cheerful creatures, the park has been carefully landscaped in line with the butterfly’s natural habitat.

This simulated county comprises more than 15,000 plants from 100 different species which have been scrupulously planted to resemble a Malaysian rainforest environment. In the middle of the park lies a hydro-pond, built in limestone. A spectator area has been made around this pond which offers a commanding view of colorful butterflies. Undoubtedly, this multi-colored sight is a divine experience of its own kind.

One can also visit the nursery and breeding area, which are dedicated to butterflies. Here you can watch both preserved and live specimens of butterflies, about 1,230 species in all. Other interesting facility provided here is Insect Museum, where one can learn about the life cycle and mating habits of the butterflies. To sum up, KL Butterfly Park is a nice place to gather information and cherish the sight of creepy-crawlers.

Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur, literally Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, is a unique habitat of birds in the capital of Malaysia. KL Bird Park is famous globally as ‘The World’s Largest Covered Bird Park’. In 1991, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park was formally opened by Her Majesty Queen of Malaysia-Tunku Bainun. Ever since it has been managed by DBKL (City Hall) until its administration got into the hands of Safari Bird Park & Wonderland, in 2001.

The Bird Park sprawls in 20.9 acres of lush valley terrain of Lake Gardens, and is home to over 5,000 birds from approximately 200 species of local and international birds. After coming here, you will feel as if you have been transported into another world because watching colorful and melodic birds perching freely is an entirely different kind of experience. The most unique feature of this park is that here birds are let free in the aviary, which actually resembles their natural habitat.

Some of the frequently noticeable birds are Hornbills, Flamingos, Parrots, Cockatoos, Storks, Pheasants, Mynahs, Pigeons, Macaws, Ducks, and Waterhens. Besides Malaysia, the birds also have been collected from countries, such as, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Indonesia, Tanzania, China, Holland, Africa, South America, and South East Asia. As expected, Bird-watching is a most common activity out here and bird lovers are often seen with their binoculars on.

Since the park has abundant floral wealth, the birds get out of sight at times. So it would be nice idea to carry your binoculars along, to have the full view of birds. Due to its innovative concept of keeping birds in natural surroundings, KL Bird Park has become the favorite haunt of research scientists who study about birds and their behavioral patterns in their natural habitat. To put succinctly, Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is a nice place to watch birds chirping and peeping freely.

Location: Near Kuala Lumpur Tower
Established In: 1906
Highlights: Remarkable variety of flora & fauna
How To Reach: One can reach here by hiring taxis, or by boarding buses, trains from the city.

Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is known to be one of the oldest permanent forest reserves in Malaysia. Earlier known as Bucket Weld Forest Reserve, Bukit Nanas was declared as a forest reserve in 1906. In 1934, it got the recognition of being a Wildlife Reserve and Bird Sanctuary. Later, in 1950, its unspoiled section of about five hectares was declared as a Virgin Jungle Reserve. The Reserve, sprawled in 10.5 hectares, is a remarkable tropical rainforest near KL Tower in Kuala Lumpur.

It is sited right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and can be easily accessed from Jalan Ampang, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Raja Chulan. While paying a visit to KL Tower, you can formulate the itinerary including Bukit Nanas seeing that it lies just beside the entrance to the Tower. A visit to this florally-rich sanctuary refreshes one to the core. Likewise, this prosperous forest also helps in purifying the air of its environs. The exotic variety of flora that thrives within the forest consists of rare herbs, creepers, ferns, and climbers.

You can follow a few of the nature trails, like Merbau Trail (361m long) and Jelutong Trail (300m long), in this forest reserve. Along the trail, you might witness some colorful butterflies and insects. If you are fortunate enough, you may possibly see the silver lacquer and the long tailed macauque monkeys that exist in this park. Some other varieties of fauna, existing in the park, include Squirrels, White-Throated King Fisher, Common Myna, Yellow-Vented Bulbul and White-Rumped Shama.

Each path or trail is marked by informative signages, which are installed near the trees species, such as, Kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica), Keruing bulu (Dipterocarpus baudii), Jelutong (Dyera costulata), Meranti pa’ang (Shorea bracteolata), and Rattan (Calamus manan). People, who love jogging, can have a good time here because certain paths in the forest are ideal for the activity. An open gymnasium is also accessible for everyone who could do with stretching and exercising.

Location: Jalan Perdana
Built In: 1961
Highlights: Different exhibits related to Tun Abdul Razak
How To Reach: One can easily reach here by hiring taxis, or by boarding trains, buses from the city.

As the name suggests, Tun Abdul Razak Memorial was established in the loving memory of the second Prime Minister of Malaysia-the late Tun Abdul Razak. The Memorial, built in Oct’ 1961, used to be the official residence of the legend himself until his death in 1976. However, this building called Sri Taman was shortly occupied (1978 – 1981) by Malaysia’s third Prime Minister-Tun Hussein Onn.

Tun Razak, who was a brilliant administrator, is even now affectionately remembered for his sagacity of social justice and the rural development programmes, he conducted. As recognition of the prodigy’s contribution to the growth of the country and its people, Sri Taman was legitimately turned into Tun Abdul Razak Memorial in 1994. Since it was established to preserve all the library materials, documents and personal belongings of Tun Abdul Razak, the memorial has actually maintained the personal touch in the entire exhibition.

Be it Tun’s favorite golf cart or speed boat, the exhibition has even revealed his well-maintained bedroom and study room that comprise the original furnishings. Moreover, Tun’s one of the favorite hobbies is also on display i.e. his collection of walking sticks. In fact, some other interesting things like the gifts, souvenirs and momentos, which Tun received from the monarchs throughout the world, are also on display. These include some of the world’s finest works of art. To conclude, Tun Abdul Razak Memorial is a great place to visit on a trip to Kuala Lumpur.

Location: Jalan Gereja, Kuala Lumpur
Highlights: Artifacts, Historical Pictures, Earlier Phones
Significance: It is the first interactive museum of Malaysia.
How To Reach: One can easily reach Telekom Museum by hiring taxis, or by boarding trains, buses from the city.

Muzium Telekomunikasi Negara, literally National Telecommunications Museum, is the first interactive museum in Malaysia. Located in the middle of soaring buildings along Jalan Gereja, the museum is frequently called Muzium Telekom by the locals in Kuala Lumpur. Its distinctive two-storey building boasts of Neo-Classical Greek architecture. Originally, the edifice was constructed to accommodate the Central Battery Manual Telephone Exchange in 1928.

In 1985, the building was intended to knock down to construct a new 26-storey office complex, but the then Prime Minister stepped in to prevent the demolition and designated it for conservation. Consequently, the building was restored at the whopping cost of 10 million ringgits. That’s the history and what earlier used to be a telephone exchange is a specialized museum today. It stands apart from other buildings, in conjunction with its eight imposing pillars.

This telecom museum traces 120 years of telecommunications development, from the initial Morse Code Telegraph with its ‘ketuk-ketuk’ to the cell phones and digital networks of these days. In its 900 square meters of exhibition space, it houses an audio-visual theatre, an education room for school groups, archives and resource areas, a courtyard café, and a souvenir shop. In fact, the museum serves as a repository of various telecommunication equipments, including even the ones that date back to pre-war years.

As soon as you’ll enter the museum, a computerized robot will greet you and gradually, you’ll hear the chronological accounts of every milestone in the nation’s telecommunications history, together with a number of artifacts from the relevant eras and soundscapes. Check out the historical photographs, printed materials, soundscapes and artifacts, while enjoying the interesting behind-the-scene narratives of the people who helped out in developing the country’s telecommunications.

It’s worth experiencing ‘the story’ of the early pioneers through your own eyes and ears. While your stay in Kuala Lumpur, definitely pay a visit to this interactive museum and enlighten yourself with the telecommunication record of Malaysia.

Location: Jalan Perdana
Established In: 1961
Highlights: Cessna, Marine Police boat, Ferret car, etc.
How To Reach: One can reach here by hiring taxis or by boarding buses, trains from the city.

The Muzium Polis Diraja Malaysia, literally Royal Malaysian Police Museum, is a unique museum dedicated to the valiant heroes of Malaysia. Established in 1961, the museum exhibits several thousands of artifacts, documents, and items about crime and crime prevention. The exhibits were initially housed in the Police Senior Officers’ Mess, which was later renovated and outfitted as a Museum at a cost of approx. RM8 million.

Located along Jalang Perdana in Kuala Lumpur, the full-fledged museum was formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on 24 July 1999. The Museum has got a remarkable collection of everything related to the Malaysian Police, since its origin in Melaka Sultanate till the present day. In every 3 months, special theme exhibitions are organized here. The museum is equipped with many interactive touch screen terminals, which can be used to learn more information about the history of the Malaysian police.

About 7,595 artifacts recount the important events though the marvelous display of the memorabilia. Its well-kept compound boasts of the Malaysian Police Force’s first aircraft – a single-engine Cessna, Marine Police boat, Ferret car, guns seized from Communist Terrorists (CTs) and Botak Chin-the infamous gangster. In fact, a collection of cars used by previous ISPs of Malaysia is also on display here. However, the main museum is divided into 3 galleries.

While the first gallery reveals the initial police uniforms and plaques, the history of the models of vehicles that were used by the police are displayed in the second gallery. Here things put on show also include different types of weapons that were confiscated from the criminals and communists. The third gallery reveals the most difficult times of the nation, for example, the history of Japanese Occupation during World War II, the disagreement with Indonesia, etc. Overall, the Royal Malaysian Police Museum is a nice and informative place.

Location: RMAF Base, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama
Established In: 1985
Highlights: 18 phased-out aircrafts
How To Reach: One can reach the museum by hiring taxis or by boarding trains, buses from the city.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force Museum is a significant museum pertaining to history of aviation in Malaysia. Located at RMAF base along Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama in Kuala Lumpur, the museum aspires to be a resource center of aviation history. In 1985, it was formally opened by the Chief of Armed Forces Staff – Gen Tan Sri Ghazali bin Dato Mohd Seth, in conjunction with the 27th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

The museum was established with an intention of storing and displaying various items and records regarding the Air Force of Malaysia. A modest beginning of the museum at Sungai Besi Air Force Base was never expected to reach such heights. It intended to acquire the Air Force aircrafts that were timed out since the early 1960s. Started with just five aircrafts as exhibits, it now has no less than 18 phased-out aircrafts on display.

Associated with the Royal Aeronautical Society Malaysia (RAeSM), it is actually a hub of activities for recreational aviation because aeromodelling and radio-controlled (R/C) flying activities are encouraged by the RAeSM. Here one can see numerous photographs, momentos, engines, articles, aircraft models, uniforms, armament, and communication equipment, which describe the evolvement of the Malaysian Air Force.

Some of the aircrafts presently in the collection include Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer, Scottish Aviation Single Pioneer, Hunting Piston Provost, DeHavilland Dove, CAC Avon Sabre jet, etc. The Museum has begun running out of space due to innumerable exhibits. Seeing the situation, the larger aircrafts are parked outside though the smaller ones are parked in the hangar. The museum is further planning to reinstate an old Bulldog aircraft, dating back to 1950s.
